LET'S START!

Note: Work in continuous rounds (in a spiral).

Body

Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6).

Rnd 2: 6 inc (12).

Rnd 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) ×6 (18).

Rnd 4: (2 sc, 1 inc) ×6 (24).

Rnd 5: (3 sc, 1 inc) ×6 (30).

Rnd 6: (4 sc, 1 inc) ×6 (36).

Rnd 7: (5 sc, 1 inc) ×6 (42).

Rnd 8: (6 sc, 1 inc) ×6 (48).

Rnd 9: (7 sc, 1 inc) ×6 (54).

Rnds 10–14: 54 sc in each round (5 rounds total).

Rnd 15: (7 sc, 1 dec) ×6 (48).

Rnd 16: 48 sc.

Rnd 17: (6 sc, 1 dec) ×6 (42).

Rnd 18: 42 sc.

Rnd 19: (5 sc, 1 dec) ×6 (36).

Rnd 20: 36 sc.

Rnd 21: (4 sc, 1 dec) ×6 (30).

Rnd 22: 30 sc.

Rnd 23: (3 sc, 1 dec) ×6 (24).

Rnds 24–25: 24 sc in each round.

Rnd 26: 24 sc in the back loops only (BLO).

Rnd 27: (2 sc, 1 dec) ×6 (18), crocheting through both loops.

Stuff firmly before continuing.

Rnd 28: (1 sc, 1 dec) ×6 (12).

Rnd 29: 6 dec. If the opening is not very large, 4 or 5 decreases may be enough to close it.

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of at least 5 cm. Tie a knot, but do not trim the tail.

Using a yarn needle, pass the remaining tail through the body (Photo 1) and bring it out through the center of the MR (Photo 2). Gently pull the tail so the knot at the base is hidden inside the body (Photo 3). Keep the yarn slightly taut and tie another knot close to the MA. This will prevent the base from bulging outward. Trim the remaining yarn to finish.

Lower Head Ridge

Locate the round of visible loops created when working Rnd 26. As you follow this round, you'll notice a small step where the line of loops is interrupted. Insert your hook into the lowest point of this step  and make one chain to secure the yarn.

Next, repeat the following sequence 8 times:

1 sc in the next stitch; in the following stitch work (1 hdc, 3 dc, 1 hdc) all into the same stitch; 1 sl st in the next stitch.

When you have finished, fasten off with a knot and cut the yarn. Also secure the starting yarn tail by tying a knot against the body of the octopus.

Tentacles (make 5)

Rnd 1: Ch 42.

Rnd 2: Work 3 dc in each chain, starting in the second chain from the hook.

When finished, leave a long yarn tail for sewing. Sew each end of the tentacle to the body, positioning it between the edge of the body and the magic ring. Secure the starting yarn tail by tying a knot against the body of the octopus, then trim the excess yarn.

Eyes

- Right Eye – Pin Placement

Step 1: Starting from the magic ring, count 13 rounds down. Insert a pin between two stitches. This marks the inner corner of the right eye.

Step 2: From the first pin, skip 2 stitches to the right and place the second pin 1 round above.

Step 3: From the second pin, skip 2 stitches to the right and place the third pin 1 round below. This pin should be level with the first pin.

Step 4: From the third pin, skip 1 stitch to the right and place the fourth pin 1 round above.

- Right Eye – Sewing with Black Yarn

Step 1: Insert the needle through the side of the body, making sure it passes between the stitches without catching any yarn strands, and bring it out at the first pin. Leave a yarn tail of at least 5 cm (2 in) at the starting point.

Step 2: Insert the needle at the second pin and bring it out at the third pin.

Step 3: Insert the needle through the second pin again. Do not pull the yarn too tightly so the eye keeps its rounded shape. Bring the needle out again at the third pin.

Step 4: Insert the needle at the fourth pin and bring it out beside the inner edge of the first eye, leaving a gap of 4 stitches.

Left Eye – Pin Placement

Step 1: From the point where you brought the yarn out (imagine placing a pin there), skip 2 stitches to the left and place the second pin 1 round above.

Step 2: From the second pin, skip 2 stitches to the left and place the third pin 1 round below. This pin should be level with the first one.

Step 3: From the third pin, skip 1 stitch to the left and place the fourth pin 1 round above.

- Left Eye – Sewing with Black Yarn

1º: Insert the needle at the second pin and bring it out at the third pin.

2º: Insert the needle through the second pin again. Do not pull the yarn too tightly so the eye keeps its rounded shape. Bring the needle out again at the third pin.

3º: Insert the needle at the fourth pin and bring it out through the same point as the starting yarn tail. Tie the two yarn tails together with a couple of simple knots.

4º: Trim the yarn tails close to the knot. Then, using the eye of the needle, push the knot inside the body to hide it.
